AEO Optimization

Be the one answer,
not one of ten.

Answer Engine Optimization is the narrowest layer and the one with the steepest payoff. SEO competes for one of ten links. GEO competes to be among the sources. AEO competes to be the answer itself, and in that competition second place is the same as absent.

Direct Answer Block, annotated

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content and entity signals so AI answer engines select your business as the answer to a question. Unlike SEO, which competes for one of ten ranked links, AEO competes for a single cited answer.

Position

First thing on the page, before any preamble. Engines lift from the top.

Length

Between 30 and 80 words. Long enough to be complete, short enough to quote whole.

Self-contained

Makes full sense with nothing around it. No "as we discussed above".

Defines then contrasts

States what the thing is, then what it is not. Contrast is highly quotable.

The mechanics

Five signals
decide it.

An engine choosing a single answer is making a confidence judgement. These five inputs are what that judgement runs on, and they are all things you can engineer.

01

Structured content

Question-shaped headings, FAQ sections and Direct Answer Blocks. Flowing prose is readable by humans and awkward for machines to excerpt cleanly.

02

Entity recognition

A consistent, confirmable record across your site, profiles and directories. Ambiguity makes an engine default to the competitor whose data it can verify.

03

Independent citations

Being mentioned by sources other than yourself. Self-description is the weakest evidence an engine has access to.

04

Freshness

Roughly half of AI-cited content was published or updated in the last 13 weeks (Amsive, 2026). Recency stands in for accuracy.

05

Topical authority

Depth on one subject, interlinked, beats breadth across many. Clusters read as expertise; scattered posts read as output.

06

Schema that confirms it

FAQPage and Article markup so the structure above is stated explicitly rather than inferred from your layout.

Self-check

Six questions,
one honest score.

Answer these about your own site. Nothing is sent anywhere, nothing is stored, and there is no email gate. It runs entirely in your browser and simply names which signals you are missing.

Do your key pages open with a self-contained answer?A 30 to 80 word passage that makes sense quoted on its own.

Are your headings written as the questions people ask?"What is X?" rather than "Our approach".

Do you have a visible FAQ section with FAQPage markup? The format engines pull specific answers from most often.

Is your business a confirmable entity?A knowledge-graph entry, and identical details everywhere you appear.

Has anyone credible written about you recently?Coverage, directories or expert commentary, not your own blog.

Were your main pages updated in the last 13 weeks? The window inside which roughly half of AI-cited content sits.

0/6

Answer the six above and this will tell you which signals are missing. It does not produce a grade, because a grade would be made up.

Want us to check it properly?

The self-check relies on what you already know. An audit checks what an engine actually sees, which is usually different.
