FundamentalsSEO vs GEO vs AEO: The Plain-Language Guide
Updated June 2026 · Axenor Consulting
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) earns you a ranked position in Google's list of links. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) earns you a citation inside an AI-generated answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) earns you the single recommended answer when a buyer asks one specific question. In 2026, a business with only SEO is visible on one of three search channels. The three require different content structures and authority signals, but built together they compound.
A law firm in Limassol has built strong traditional SEO over five years. Page-one Google rankings for its main practice areas. A fast, well-structured website. A Google Business Profile with 200 reviews. A marketing manager who tracks organic traffic every month.
In Q1 2026, a prospective client in London types into ChatGPT: "which Cyprus law firms specialise in cross-border M&A for tech companies?" The firm does not appear. The model names three others. The client emails one of them.
The firm's Google rankings are irrelevant to that query. It has one channel of visibility in a market that now has three. This guide explains the three channels, what each requires, and how to build all three without starting from scratch.
What are SEO, GEO and AEO in plain language?
SEO - Search Engine Optimization has been the dominant digital-marketing discipline for 25 years. It optimises for ranked position in Google (and, to a smaller degree, Bing). A user types a query, Google returns a list, and the user chooses which link to click. The goal is to sit as high on that list as possible.
GEO - Generative Engine Optimization is the newer discipline, emerging as AI search went mainstream from 2023 onward. It optimises for citation inside AI-generated answers. When a user asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini a question, the model generates a response that may cite specific sources. GEO is the practice of structuring content and building authority so your business is among those cited.
AEO - Answer Engine Optimization is the most specific layer. It optimises for single-answer selection: the moment a user asks one precise question and the engine returns one recommended source. Not a list, not a set of options. AEO decides whose name appears in that singular recommendation.
How do SEO, GEO and AEO differ?
| SEO | GEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Channel | Google / Bing | ChatGPT / Perplexity / Gemini | ChatGPT / Gemini / voice assistants |
| Output | Ranked list of links | AI answer with citations | Single recommended answer |
| User action | Chooses from the list | Reads the cited sources | Acts on one recommendation |
| Selection criteria | Relevance, authority, technical health | Structure, entity clarity, freshness | Structured Q&A, entity trust, direct answers |
| Overlap with SEO | Self | Partial (Google AI Overviews) | Minimal |
| Measurement | Rankings, clicks, traffic | Citation frequency, query coverage | Answer inclusion, query specificity |
The channels are pulling apart, and there is now a sourced number for it. In 2025, the share of Google AI Overview citations that also ranked in Google's own top 10 fell from 76% to 38% in a single year (Ahrefs). Ranking well no longer predicts being cited. Building SEO does not automatically build GEO; building GEO does not automatically build SEO. They need overlapping but distinct investment.
What does SEO require, and what does it still do well?
Traditional SEO remains essential in 2026. Google is still the largest single traffic source for most websites, handling on the order of 8.5 billion searches a day on independent estimates. The fundamentals have not changed:
- Technical site health (crawlability, page speed, mobile performance)
- On-page content optimised for target topics and queries
- Backlinks from relevant, authoritative sources
- A complete Google Business Profile for local searches
- E-E-A-T signals: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness
What has changed is the context. Google AI Overviews now appear on roughly 48% of US searches (BrightEdge, 2026), and far more in commercial niches. Those overviews pull from web content but use GEO-style selection - structured content, authority signals - rather than pure ranking position. A page ranking eighth organically can appear in the AI Overview; a page ranking second may not.
In 2026, SEO is necessary but no longer sufficient. It keeps you visible on Google. It does not make you visible on the other channels where buying decisions are now being formed.
What does GEO require?
GEO rests on four pillars.
Structured content. AI engines prioritise content organised around questions and answers. That means Direct Answer Blocks at the top of pages (30-80 word, self-contained passages), FAQ sections on key pages, and H2/H3 headings written as questions rather than generic labels.
Entity clarity. An engine needs to understand who you are before it recommends you. Entity clarity means consistent name, address and phone data across every platform, a complete Google Business Profile, professional directory listings, and ideally a Wikidata or Wikipedia entity. When an engine holds a confident record of your business, it can name you with confidence. In Axenor's June 2026 audit, none of the 10 Cyprus corporate-services firms we checked had a Wikidata or Wikipedia entity - the clearest entity anchors an engine can use.
Independent mentions. Models weight sources outside your own website more heavily than your own pages. Press mentions, industry-publication citations and directory entries that reference your business by name are the raw material of GEO authority. 2025 Ahrefs research across 75,000 brands found brand mentions correlate with AI visibility about three times more strongly than backlinks.
Content freshness. Roughly half of all content cited by AI engines was published or updated in the last 13 weeks (Amsive, 2026). A library you built in 2023 and never touched is progressively losing AI citations even while it still ranks on Google. A 13-week refresh cycle - updating data, strengthening Direct Answer Blocks, sharpening FAQ sections - is not optional for sustained GEO visibility. (This article is on that cycle; hence the June update.)
What does AEO require?
AEO is the most focused layer. It optimises for the single moment when an engine selects one answer to present.
Question and direct-answer pairs. Every FAQ entry should be a precise question followed by a complete answer in two to five sentences, phrased the way a real buyer would ask an assistant.
FAQ schema markup. FAQPage schema tells engines your Q&A is structured data, raising the probability of extraction and citation. It is one of the highest-return technical changes available for AEO - and one almost nobody local has made. In Axenor's June 2026 audit, not one of the 10 firms had FAQ markup, and seven had no proper structured data of any kind.
Local-business and organisation schema. For firms serving a specific market, these tell engines who you are, where you operate and what you do - all of which shape answer selection for geographic queries.
Topical completeness. AEO rewards depth. A firm that has answered 40 distinct questions about Cyprus company formation is a more confident citation for that query than one with a single service page.
How do the three layers stack in practice?
The most visible businesses in 2026 - on Google, on ChatGPT and in direct AI answers - built all three layers on purpose.
- SEO only: visible on Google, absent from AI-generated recommendations.
- SEO + GEO: visible on Google, cited in AI responses, occasionally in AI Overviews.
- SEO + GEO + AEO: visible on Google, cited in AI responses, and named as the single recommended answer for specific queries in its category.
Each layer compounds the others. GEO work (entity clarity, independent mentions) strengthens SEO's E-E-A-T and authority. AEO work (FAQ schema, structured content) strengthens GEO's extractability. SEO work (technical health, content depth) is the foundation the other two build on. The window to build all three before they become table stakes is open now; in 12 months, the firms that started this quarter will hold a structural lead that is hard to replicate.
Where should you start? A prioritisation framework
If you already have SEO infrastructure. Start with GEO. Add Direct Answer Blocks to your top 10 pages. Add FAQ sections to your main service pages. Implement FAQPage and Article schema if it is not already in place. Audit your entity signals for consistency. This is two to four weeks of focused work and begins moving AI citation within about eight weeks.
If you are starting from scratch. Build SEO and GEO together - they share one content infrastructure. Write with Direct Answer Blocks from the start, format headings as questions, add FAQ sections, and build for both Google ranking and AI extractability.
If you already have SEO and GEO. Add AEO-specific work: expand FAQ coverage to 20-plus questions per key topic, add FAQ schema if it is missing, audit which specific queries you appear in and which you do not, and identify the nearest competitor showing up in answers where you are absent.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SEO, GEO and AEO? SEO optimises for a ranked position in Google's list of links. GEO optimises for being cited inside an AI-generated answer across engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. AEO is the narrowest layer: being selected as the single recommended answer to one specific question. Every AEO tactic is part of GEO, but not every GEO tactic is AEO-specific.
Does SEO still matter if AI search is growing? Yes. Google remains the largest single traffic source for most websites, and Google AI Overviews still draw from web content. SEO is the foundation; GEO and AEO are the layers that make that foundation visible across all three channels. The catch is that ranking and being cited are diverging - the AI Overview top-10 overlap fell from 76% to 38% in a year.
Can I build all three without a large budget? The core structural changes - Direct Answer Blocks, FAQ sections, schema markup, entity consistency - can be implemented by an in-house team or a content writer. They take time and guidance rather than significant media spend.
How do I measure GEO and AEO performance? Run a fixed set of five to ten buyer prompts each month in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Track whether your business is named, how accurately it is described, and how that query coverage changes over time. Citation frequency is the core AI-visibility metric in 2026.
Which businesses benefit most from AEO? Professional-services firms (accounting, law, fiduciary, financial advisory), healthcare providers and specialist B2B providers see the highest impact, because their buyers use AI to build shortlists before making contact. The higher the buyer intent, the more AEO matters.
Is any of this relevant for small businesses? Yes. AI engines do not weight answers by company size. A small firm with strong structured content, clear entity signals and a few independent citations can appear in AI answers ahead of a larger firm running a static website with no GEO infrastructure.
